MUSIC THERAPY CONFERENCE
The twenty-second annual conference of the Canadian Association for
Music Therapy will take place this year on the campus of Wilfrid
Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario on May 11, 12, and 13.
Among the delegates from Canada, the USA, and Great Britain will
be proifessional music therapists, music therapy students, and
members of other health care professions who have an interest in
the applications of music in treatment. Music therapists are both
musicians and therapists who have been trained to use music as a
therapeutic agent. Topics being discussed at the three-day
conference will include music therapy with {*filter*}ly abused and
other special-needs children, in psychiatric and geriatric
programs, in childbirth, in palliative care, and in substance abuse
programs. A highlight of the conference program will be a concert
of piano and vocal improvisation by Ken Medema, an internationally
acclaimed music therapist, composer, and performer who has been
blind from birth. The Canadian Association for Music Therapy,
founded in 1974, is the organization granting professional
accreditation to music therapists in Canada.
