 Lipoma information sought

A small growth in my lower abdomen has recently been diagnosed as a lipmoma.
According to my physician, it is almost totally my option as to the removal
of said lipoma.  My knowledge of lipomae is woefully inadequate.  If anyone
here has some knowledge in this area, I'd appreciate any information you
could provide.  Pointers to reference works would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Wes

A lipoma is just a benign fatty tumor.  I imagine it would only
have to be removed if it caused discomfort or interfered with
normal function somehow, or it produced cosmetic problems.

I think your doctor is right--it's up to you.

Wes,

I can't point you to any references outside standard surgical
texts.  I can tell you that I developed a number of lipomas (if
you insist on Latin it would be lipomata) while in medical school.
This was distressing, to say the least.  I spoke with several
faculty members I respect and did lots of reading (just didn't
save the references!).  The conclusion I reached was that if the
tumors ever got big enough to interfere with mobility or function
or if they got ugly I'd have 'em whacked out.  Otherwise, I plan
to leave well enough alone.  My recollection is that lipomas are
very common and very unlikely to undergo malignant transformation.
However, I'm sure there's a surgeon on the net with more up-to-
date information.
