This may sound like a silly question, but how about pregnant women developing
this lactose intollerence.  Is this an unusual situation or can this be a
common problem?

The reason I ask is that before I became pregnant I never had any problem
drinking milk or eating yogurts, ice cream, etc.  Now all of the above seem to
stir up a really {*filter*} case of heartburn which I have discussed with my
doctor.  In fact, she appeared to be rather surprised that the yogurt I was
having difficulty with was Dannon, which is supposed to be one of the best on
the market
due to it's live cultures.

Thanks for any further info that you might have to offer.

Lactose intolerance is a problem with having low levels of or missing
lactase, the enzyme which splits lactose into glucose and galactose.
When the undigested lactose reaches the intestine, it is metabolized by
the bacteria in the gut which produces gas and a variety of acids that
act as osmotic laxatives.  This ends up producing gas, cramps and
diarrhea.  Lactose intolerance wouldn't produce heartburn.

Your problem might be better described as a "dairy intolerance".
Sometimes dairy products can stimulate stomach acid secretion, and a
condition like a hiatal hernia (which is not uncommon in pregnancy)
can interact with this to produce heartburn.
