Seeking advice on OTC/Alternative sleep aids

I am taking Ritalin for daytime hypersomnolence arising from (diagnosed)
narcolepsy.  This seems to work quite well, but I am left with the
(perceived) problem of inefficient/"low quality" sleep--I never awake
refreshed from a night's sleep, now matter the actual amount.  I realize
that manipulating sleep cycles, etc. pharmacologically is still pretty much
black magic (but **please** give me more info if I am wrong!), but are
there any remedies that are believed to improve the overall quality of
sleep or the fraction of time in deep restorative sleep?  Any pointers
would be appreciated, but I am primarily interested in non-{*filter*},
non-barbiturate types of things.  Post or E-mail is fine.  Many thanks in
advance...
