Irregular heart beat

 Irregular heart beat

I'm curious to know if your wife exercises alot? I have a very irregular
heart beat, and I have learned that athetes have very good vagal tone. One
of the signs of this is that the heart will speed up during inhalation, and
slow down again during expiration. Oddly, years ago I had this checked and
no one explained why this was occurring. In fact, one doctor seemed quite
amazed by the pattern! But, I run my heart hard all the time, have been
subjected to several VO2 Max tests, halter  monitors, portable monitors
(try jumping out of a pool right after doing butterfly to catch
an irregular beat!), and my heart still beats strong. Even had a sonogram
done. It is always best to get something like this checked, but I spent
years secretly fearing I had something major wrong that was never detected.
It turns out my heart is just in top shape and the irregular heart beat
is a sign of this.

If cycles you described correspond to breathing phases, this is normal.
See your MD if not.

I have a simple query if any one can help me. I'm concerned about my
Wife's heart beat being irregular. Compared to mine it seems not to be
consistent, for example my heart beat is regular and occurs at regular
intervals, my wife's on the other hand varies in that it beats regular
for say 3 or 4 beats then the spacing between the next 3 or 4 beats is
greater. I hope I've explained it well enough, any info would be
appreciated. Thanks Max.

Hi!
You should consult your MD. Try also eliminating all the stimulants from
diet: caffeine,chocolats,colas(caffeine),stimulant {*filter*}, etc. Your
pharmacist would help with a more complete list.

If it's a regular beat with regularly dropped beats, the
diagnosis may include conduction blocks.  If your wife is moving
into her senior years, or has known risk factors for heart disease
(high cholesterol, high {*filter*} pressure, smoker, family history of
heart attack at young ages <55), or has symptoms suggestive of
ischemic heart disease (chest pain or heaviness, especially with
exertion, emotion or after a big meal), the likelihood or this
being serious increases and should be brought to her physician's
attention.  If she has none of the above, excersizes easily, and
is young it is less likely to be serious but I think most would
share your concern.  An electrocadiogram would be a good first
step and may be all that is needed.

The heart rate naturally varies with respiration.  This may be more
prominent in some people than others.  Normally, the heart rate
increases slightly with inspiration, and slows during exhalation.  If
you are truly concerned about it, have her doctor listen to her heart!
