CHROMIUM - TRACE MINERAL THAT REGULATES INSULIN
Chromium - trace mineral that regulates insulin
The Hindustan Times
Chromium is an essential trace mineral. It is found
naturally in a variety of foods, including grain, fruit
and potatoes. It regulates the body's insulin function,
enabling its cells to perform many important functions,
such as metabolism, building muscle, and supporting the
nervous system.
Inadequate consumption of chromium can lead to impaired
insulin activity, or insulin resistance. When the body
becomes insulin resistant, more glucose remains in the
{*filter*} stream, often getting stored away as fat. This can
lead to obesity and diabetes.
That's why people with insulin-dependent diabetes are
often prescribed chromium supplements to decrease their
insulin requirement.
Along with healthy insulin function, a chromium-rich diet
has been associated with cardiovascular fitness, lean
muscle building, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels,
and the regulation of the brain's chemical activity.
''Chromium supplements improve insulin sensitivity and
may help obese dieters reduce abdominal fat,'' says
nutritionist Ishi Khosla of Whole Foods.
