 Attention Ob.Gyn.s in Maine:

Ob.Gyn. News, an independent newspaper for physicians,
looking for comments from ob.gyn.s in Maine about the Maine
Medical Liability Demonstration Project.  The project offers
legal protection to physicians who follow specific clinical
practice guidelines.  Your comments may be included in an article
that Ob.Gyn. News will publish about the project.
We welcome comments from all ob.gyn.s in Maine, including those
not participating in the project.

For physicians involved in the project:  We would like to hear
your responses to one or more of these questions:
  1. Has following the project's ob.gyn. guidelines reduced
health care costs in your practice?
  2. Do any of the project's ob.gyn. guidelines conflict with
guidelines issued by medical societies, your malpractice insurer,
or any managed care organizations to which you belong?  If so,
which do you follow?
  3. Do you think your participation in the project affords you
increased protection against malpractice claims?
  4. How have your patients reacted to the guidelines?  Are they
aware of them?
  5. Why did you join the project?
  6. How has following the project's ob.gyn. guidelines affected
your practice?
  7. How much time did it take for you to learn about the
program, sign up, and explain the guidelines to your staff as
necessary?

For physicians in Maine who have not been involved in the
project:  We would like to ask:
1. Why aren't you participating?
2. What, if anything, can be done to decrease malpractice claims
and reduce the practice of defensive medicine?

To respond:  Please call staff writer Kathy Scarbeck at 301-
816-8742 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST.  Or you may respond
by sending written comments by fax (301-816-8738) or by e-mail

practice, and phone and fax numbers.
  Thank you for your help.
