The term simply means "too much feeling" in Latin.  It refers to the
experience of light touch or pressure on the skin being felt as more
painful than usual, or more painful than the average person would
experience.  

Common causes would be the sensation of touching a healing burn or
skin scrape, some instances of recovery from nerve damage, an area
of the body affected by shingles.  

General Medical textbooks, or textbooks of Neurology would be the
best place to start to find more detail.
