Nerve damage after minor surgery?

 Nerve damage after minor surgery?

I recently had an operation on an umbillical hernia. The operation went
well and I went home the same day. (Insurance no longer pays for hospital
stays). As a result, I got a massive peptic streppococa infection in the
area.

Now I noticed that there is almost no sensation whatsoever in a small
area above my navel, just under the center of the 3-inch insicion.

Is this a normal thing, or could some permanent damage have result from
the surgery?

It is very common and unavoidable to sever small cutaneous sensory
branches during surgery.  Sensation usually returns but it may take
several months and sometimes never does.
