Hypothyroidism is diagnosed by measuring the levels of thyroid hormones in
the {*filter*}: In my lab we start by measuring Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
and if the levels of this are high we measure free thyroxine (fT4), if low
we measure free tri-iodothyronin (fT3).
High TSH with low fT4 suggests hypothyroidism (although this may also be
seen if you are ill from some other problem, if the results are borderline).
Very high TSH (>10) is almost always due to hypothyroidism.
Once this has been done, it may be considered necessary to investigate why
you are hypo-, e.g. by looking for thyroid antibodies
