The most notorious side effect of tetracycline is its propensity
        to discolor teeth when given to children whose {*filter*} teeth haven't
        come in

I can vouch for this.  I had massive quantities of tetracycline when
I was 4-years-old.  My teeth are now very discolored.  My teeth are
also very soft.
