Help: Anesthesia during pregnacy, is it ok for baby?

Hi there

I have a question, please give me the answer if you know the answer.

My wife went through a surgery which took an hour.  She was pregnant and she didn't know.  It is assumed that the fetal life was about 17-19 days at the time of surgery.

She had a general anesthesia and the {*filter*} used were as in the following:
i) Pentothel,
ii) N2O
iii) O2
iv) Morphine

Do those {*filter*} have negative effect on the baby?
might those {*filter*} cause any added risk for the baby's health?

Your answer and time in that regard is very appreciated.

Regards

The {*filter*} that you mention are not known teratogens.  Obviously, no
{*filter*} at all would be best.  If there was on adverse effect, in early
pregnancy it would be an "all or nothing" effect.  That is, if there
were any effect a early miscarraige would occur -(  but there would not
be an increased risk for birth defects or con{*filter*} anomolies -)  Good
luck.
BTW it is often more dangerous for the baby and the mom to try to put
off or delay indicated surgery.

The EXACT same thing happened to me.  I was about a month along when I had
surgery.  The doctor said not to worry because in most cases the embryo has
not implanted itself. (The baby is not dependent on it's mothers {*filter*} and
oxygen supply yet.)  Now I must say that I was 3 1/2 months along before I
figured out I was having a baby, so at that point my risk of any
difficulties was low.  Check with your doctor to make sure and to calm any
fears.

BTW --Congratulations!!  You or your wife are welcome to call me with any
questions.
