Why am I tired?

 Why am I tired?

I've noticed, for years now, that I can become tired for no apparent reason.
That is, I have had plenty of sleep, am not depressed, have had a reasonable
meal lately.

Take today, for example.  I woke up after 10 hours of a sound sleep.  It
was a gorgeous day; perfect temperature, and the sun was shining.
I got dressed, took 8000 mg piracetam (I've started experimenting with
c.e. {*filter*}), 500 mg DMAE, and 200 mg centrophenoxine.  I ate 2 pretzels,
and drank a glass of orange juice (a european breakfast :-).  After
studying for about 45 minutes, I was dozing on the couch.

I had always simply accepted my sleepiness.  But now I think maybe something
is wrong because I had just taken several cognitive stimulants (which normally
make me more alert) and I still wanted to go to sleep.

This most often happens in the morning and after I eat lunch.
In fact, I never *ever* have any energy in the morning.  I must always
force myself to get out of bed and get going, and it ususally takes several
hours before I feel normal.

I had a recent checkup, and my glucose levels were normal.  (I didn't
mention my sleepiness to my doctor, however).  I am also perfectly
healthy otherwise; normal weight, average diet, etc.  My heart rate
(at rest) is 72 bpm, {*filter*} pressure is 115/85. I am 29 years old.

I also exercise regularly; that is, I walk to work (2K total) every day;
ok, it's not a workout, but it's more exercise than most hackers get.

So, my question is:  what could be wrong?  I appear healthy in every way,
but somehow, I feel this lack of energy is not normal.  What do you think?

                                Thanks for any hints,

i suffered from such problems when i was in my late 40s (17 years ago.) my
symptoms were worst during the winter, improving somewhat during the
summer.

no, not a seasonal disorder. one of the easily missed syndromes which
include this sleepiness is ankylosing spondylitis, a relative of, but
not the same as rheumatoid arthritis.  it can occur in young
physically active people.  in fact i knew two people in their early
thirties with  that diagnosis.

there are other syndromes which include the fatigue. however, during a
flare up of ank. sp., i could sleep 13 hours per night with no
difficulty.

diagnosis is usually made via a {*filter*} test, but there is a small
percent of the cases which  do not show the appropriate {*filter*} markers
(i am in that category.)

I have basically the same problem you do.  It got to the point that I
could barely stay awake during the day.  After a checkup everything appeared
to be fine.  I knew that wasn't the case, and even though my glucose test
came back fine, they said there was a chance that the basic glucose test
could not be conclusive.  So, I went back and had the extensive glucose
tolerance test and found out that I'm hypoglycemic (low {*filter*} sugar).  Diet
has helped quite a bit (same as a diabetic - high protein, low carbs and NO
sugar).  The diet can be a pain sometimes, but it's well worth it to feel
so much better.

Good luck.

In order to answer your question, I need to know if you are
sleepy (can't stay awake), fatigued, or both.

Everyone assumed I was doing just fine.  Despite looking athletic and walking
extensively, I battled fatigue and sleepiness continually.  I still only feel
awake and energetic after midnight.  Most people feel well when they awaken
(I assume), but I felt as though a bus had stuck me: buzzing headache, stiff,
aching muscles, and very painful joints.

A neuropsychyatrist recently diagnosed brain damage, and the above are the
least of my problems, but I found an MAO inhibitor (phenelzine, now tranyl-
cypromine) to drastically eliminate my fatigue, but only if I don't sleep
more than 2 hours a night.

I still can't read without falling asleep.  (A problem for a scholar.)
So I read for only 20 minutes at a time, outside when possible.  I've
noted several symptoms of narcolepsy (hypnopompic hallucinations, cata-
plexy, etc.), and I suspect this may be affecting my reading.

Well ... it's not much, but you wanted ANY hint.
