cytomegalovirus?

 cytomegalovirus?

I just got my {*filter*} donor card back from my first ever donation of {*filter*}.
Included with the card was a note that I am "CMV-negative" which they
seem to think is a good thing.  The note says that 'many' people have
this virus and that it can cause problems for pregnant women, transplant
patients and premature babys.  Anyway, they want more {*filter*} ... must be
a buncha vampires ... ;-)

Is CMV an STD?  How come I never heard of it before?

My {*filter*} bank reports that 60% of its {*filter*} donors are CMV
positive, but undoubtedly it varies from place to place.  CMV is
a virus that is usually acquired during childhood.  Like quite a
few other viruses, once you have it, you have it for life.  Most
people never notice having it.  It almost never causes serious
problems, except in two classes of patients: very young infants,
and those who are immunosuppressed.  In these, it can cause
respiratory and other problems.  So {*filter*} banks screen donations,
and for these categories of patients, hospitals only use CMV
negative {*filter*}.  ({*filter*} donors who are CMV negative are sometimes
said to have "baby's {*filter*}".)  For the majority of patients, CMV
positive {*filter*} is fine.

In no way is STD a venereal disease.  (I did get a small chuckle
once from a gay bashing article by one of the televangelists, who
included CMV in a list of diseases that God had supposedly
inflicted on gays.  He had probably read that AIDS patients can
have difficulty with CMV, and was too ignorant to realize that
the immunosuppressed can have difficulty with many microorganisms
that are ubiquitous but controlled in those with healthy immune
systems.  Hopefully, most people realize that religious tracts
are a poor source of medical or other scientific information.)
