 womyn/menopause/bone-density..hormone treatment?

Hi, I'm posting here with a medical question..(And i'm something of a
amateur/beginning/curious med-student myself)
My mother is a womyn in her late 40s and approaches 50 any day now.
She is going through menopause, and is being treated for the beginning stages
of osterpirosis (sp?) now, I believe. She constantly suffers from migranes,
and other headache symptoms.  The doctors have informed her she has a low
hormone count, and recommend medication or injection to remedy this. My mother
doesn't believe this is best, and refuses this treatment.  She has been a
steady drinker of milk nearly all her life, and I am curious how she could
have a calcium defiency.  What solutions or recommendations can anyone out
there make? My mother is in good shape now, and does alot of exercise
constantly (she does triatholns, x-country skiis, etc.). Is increasing her
bone density that important? Why? And if so, how may this be done?
What are the benefits and side effects OF hormone treatment? Is it needed? Why?
Thank you for yr time and consdieration in reading this..and please either
post a reply to this newsgroup, or simply e-mail me at..

If your mom is questioning her physicians advise....get another opinion.
There are many options out there, but osteoparosis nothing to be fooled
with.

Well, I don't know anything medically related to your post, but I do
know that "woman" is spelled with an "a."  Just thought you'd like to
know.

Hi Mathew,

If your mother doesn't want to use hormones (estrogen) to treat
osteoporosis, she could be tried on a new drug Fosamax which increases
bone density. It has just been released by Merck so I have no experience
with it, but the journal reports thus far are encouraging.

For a comprehensive review of he literature in lay terms see Preventing
and Reversing Osteoporosis by Alan Gaby, MD. Also check out the research
on natural progesterone for reversing osteoporosis. John Lee, MD wrote
about his 10 yrs of reversing osteoporosis in Natural Progesterone, The
Many Roles of a Natural Hormone. Alan Gaby discusses such questions as
why cultures with high dairy use tend to get osteoporosis, and why
estrogen is NOT the hormone of choice, and the fact that DHEA levels are
low in those prone to osteoporosis. It is quite a comprehensive, well
referenced book, that is in libraries and bookstores and I suggest anyone
concerned with ths topic read it - including M.D.'s . I would also hope
they would read Lee's research, before rushing for the latest drug to
treat this disease. Women have been medicated enough.

Travis - Your school must have a pretty sleepy student body.

"Womyn", sometimes spelled "wimmin".is a political statement that has to
do with (in my opinion - with the perversion of) feminism.

Calcium uptake is facilitated by estrogen - bone loss at menopause is a
significant danger for most women - the broken hip syndrome in old ladies
for example.

Personally, I *love*my Premarin.  But your mom can do very well with Vit.
E which promotes her own production of estrogen and she should eat
wheatgerm and anythng soy - I like tofu myself.  There's a discussion of
this right now on misc.health.alternative being xposted to
alt.folklore.herbs.

Check it out and download a copy of Steve Harris's great post on
vegetable hormones for your mom.  She'll appreciate it..

Should help with the headaches and insomnia too!

I think it's a crying shame that a medical student doesn't know about the
relationship between estrogen and calcium.

Something's very wrong here.

My mother drank a lot of milk, and got a lot of exercise, and has
osteoporosis. In her case, it's genetic. It is potentially bad because a
bone break, which is much likelier when bones are *not* dense, especially
of a hip when one is elderly, can be very bad, even fatal.
