 womyn/menopause/bone-density..hormone treatment?

Within 5 years of menopause about 25% of the bone is lost. Even with good
calcium ingestion the lack of Estrogens will cause a loss at this time.
Even with the new drug Fosamax that is to be used when there is a good
reason not to use Estrogens such as {*filter*} cancer or a history of
thrombophlebitis, you only treat the Osteoporosis and not the elevated
Cholesterol, worsening of {*filter*} Sugar control (if you are diabetic), the
hot flashes, lack of sleep, increased angina. Also there is a higher rate
of Alzheimer's disease in women not receiving estrogens. And of course if
she is married,  intercouse
may become less comfortable as the tissues become thinner and easier to
injure.
Stress incontinence may be a consequence of the tissue atrophy.
Heavy women suffer less as the fat in their bodies makes Estrone.
Did your mother ever smoke? Is she thin?  Also osteoporosis seems to run
in families. It may be bone structure.
At a lot of medical seminars lately, internists and family practice
doctors are being urged to have their patients on continous Estrogen
Therapy to prevent heart disease the biggest killer of women.  To prevent
endrometrial cancer, low doses of progesterone analogs eg Provera are
given along with the estrogens.

So there are good reasons to consider Estrogen therapy.  There are other
medications that can be taken to take care of the side effects of estrogen
lack but that means taking multiple medications instead just the one that
replaces what is missing.

Even if you are not able to convince your mother, think about yourself
when the time comes.

Good Luck

Maybe you can give up. There are now eight ">" in your message. We have
seen the message; you've even gotten a response.
