 Bell's Palsy?

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.  He is confused about what to expect
over the short and longterm.  He is a Male in his late 50s.  Would someone please give me some
information concerning the following questions:

What is the expected time course? and what changes should he expect?

What are the accepted treatments?

Is the disorder subject to re-occurance?

Thanks in advance, Ron.

Typical time to recovery is 1-3 months. Very few never recover. Some more
(maybe 10%) have a prolonged course (3-6 months) with good recovery
except for a twitch of the corner of the mouth when the eyes blink (this
is of cosmetic importance only).

None, really. Corticosteroids are often used during the first week or so
if there are no contraindications; they probably don't help much.
Lubricating the open eye with artificial tears - especially at night -
may be necessary to protect the cornea. If there is evidence of Lyme
disease, appropriate antibiotics are used.

Yes, but in fewer than 10% of cases.

 Bell's Palsy?
Dear Ron,

I had Bell's Palsey when I was a kid, around 14 yrs. old.  From what I can
remember it seemed to have been brought on by having nerves in my mouth
exposed to cold air after having dental work done.  I came home, went to
sleep with the window open, along with my mouth and the next time I went
to the {*filter*}surgeon they noticed it.

I had it for a couple of months.  My symptons were no {*filter*} control on
one side of my face.  I looked like I had a constant smerk.  I couldn't
close my one eye all the way and I seemed to drewl (?) alot.  All they
gave me was ointment to put in my eye to keep it from getting too dry and
sent me on my way.

I hope this helps you out.  If you find out any interesting information in
it please feel free to pass it on to me.

Beverly
