Without an ECG, it is very difficult to "diagnose" heartbeat oddities.
For instance, an ectopic beat (*extra* mini-beat) will actually sound
and feel like a *missed* beat to the {*filter*} ear.
Subjectively-sensed heartbeat anomolies can in fact indicate a whole
range of events, from a misfiring of the heart's natural pacemaker to
valve problems. Some of these events are relatively benign, and several
can indicate something more serious. The ECG gives the detailed picture
of the complex electrical events in your heartbeat, and is a must if you
or your doctor want to diagnose the problem.
Treatment, likewise, will vary greatly depending on the problem. Some
oddies require nothing in particular. Others may require strictly
defensive measures (antibiotics before an invasive procedure like major
dental work), while still others indicate pace-correcting {*filter*}, or
elimination of caffiene and nicotine.
