Men with Urinary Retention Can Avoid Painful and Harmful Prostate Surgery
(News Release) Men with Urinary Retention Can Avoid Painful and Harmful
Prostate Surgery
Men suffering from acute urinary retention, who are forced to wear
catheters, can be treated with repetitive prostatic massage and
medications instead of undergoing harmful surgery.
A new study describes five men who went into acute urinary retention,
were catheterized, and were told by their urologists that they must
undergo prostate surgery. All five men avoided surgery by undergoing
repetitive prostatic massage combined with antibiotics and
alpha-blockers.
During treatment, statistically significant improvements occurred in
symptom scores, prostatic fluid white {*filter*} cell counts, prostatic
fluid red {*filter*} cell counts, urinary white {*filter*} cell counts, and
urinary red {*filter*} cell counts.
The paper, "Repetitive Prostatic Massage and Drug Therapy as an
Alternative to Transurethral Resection of the Prostate" was published
as the featured article on Medscape General Medicine
