Strep throat abroad / Cost of a doctor in Ireland / No health care
:
:
: I'm going to be visiting Ireland in about a week (Galway) and
: was curious how much a typical visit to a doctor would cost a foreigner.
: I don't have any health insurance. Typically during the fall/winter, I
: get "strep throat" - a bacterial throat infection that needs to be treated
: with antibiotics - about 3 times. Since I'm susceptible to strep throat here,
: I figure I'll be even more susceptible to it overseas with bacteria floating
: around that I've never been exposed to.
A typical visit to a family doctor in Ireland costs between 12 and 15 pounds
(between 19 and 24 dollars). He or she will prescribe the drug you require
which you then get in the local pharmacy. Often the {*filter*} will cost more
than the visit to the doctor but then that all depends on what {*filter*} you're
getting.
:
: I have one of those Youth cards - "Go 25" that includes some health
: insurance, but presumably this is for emergency situations - getting hit by
: a car? breaking a leg?
The European equivalent of this would not cover non-emergency situations but
you'll have to check the small print on the insurance agreement.
