Well, supposedly, the OTC preparations also have something that
softens the wax, as well as some bubbling action from the
peroxide.  Personally, I find that recommending a few drops of
peroxide in each ear once a week or so has them coming back
with ears sans ear wax, and with no evidence of irritation.
