A brain abscess is a localized infection in the brain, usually with
edema (swelling) around it.  It obviously can be very serious and
sometimes fatal.  A patient with a brain abscess typically has a
neurologic deficit such as hemiplegia (paralysis on one side) or
alteration of consciousness.  The most common cause of brain abscess
nowadays is unchecked infections due to immune system compromise
from AIDS.
