HELP: Need MRI but am claustrophobic

My doctor believes I have a pituitary tumor (prolactin produding) based
on {*filter*} tests. He wants me to get an MRI to confirm and whatever. I went
for the MRI, and thought I could do it. But after after a few seconds I had
them yank me out of the tube. I was absolutely petrified - waves of panic
swept over me and several hours later I'm still very unsettled. I knew that I
am somewhat claustrophobic, can't stand small elevators, back seat of small
cars, etc. Thought that maybe with music and my eyes covered, I could get
thru it - but NO WAY can I go into a tube like that again.

I need an MRI facility with a relatively open machine. Maybe with that and
some valium I can get thru this thing. Does anyone know of such a facility -
preferably in the New York City area? But I will travel if I have to.

I am also interested in anything has to say about that kind of tumor.

Please email any reply.
Thanks.

HELP: Need MRI but am claustrophobic
The original post described someone with trouble handling an MRI due to
claustrophobia.  Music was used as was covering the eyes.  Did you try a
sedative?

From another newsgroup, there was a thread on open MRI's.  I think there are
some newer machines in the Washington, D.C. area that are more open the the
older machines.

This may or may not help you, but many people who have a problem with the
MRI have them hang a small mirror on the inside above your head. When you're
lying on your back looking straight up it should be above you. This seems to
help the claustraphobia. Just a suggestion, good luck.

10 - 20 mg. valium IV should do the trick quite nicely.  You won't even
need an open machine. The radiologist can arrange it for you.  They may
not advertise it, but they do it all the time.

Don't know if this will help, but I saw on the news a couple of weeks
ago a study that was done with smells, and that peppermint and lemon (I
think lemon) scents were supposed to reduce feelings of hunger and,
I think, anxiety in patients undergoing MRIs. Maybe someone else knows
  more about this study.
