tens units - effective or not?

i am interested if anyone has used / has knowledge on how effect tens units are in pain relief. in particular i would like feed back on
1. do they also stimulute nerves (depending upon the frequency etc) which i suspect because of the warning about using them with pace makers etc.
2. how would they function with leg cramps in a diabetic person? currently she uses quinine tablets and i am concerned about excessive use

there was a circuit for a kit in an english magazine (elecktor or similar) this year which i have.... if the feed back is positive i might consider building it

any comments appreciated
