 Osteoporosis and Swimming

Does anybody have information on the effect of swimming on
osteoporosis?  A 39 year-old female who swims 2000-2500 yds
4x weekly has lost 12% of her bone density in the past year,
and was wondering if swimming might be the cause.  Any ideas?

Please respond via e-mail to:

Thanks in advance.

There are dozens of papers in the medical literature on the effects of
*head-out-water-immersion* on vasopressin levels, atrial natriuretic factor,
and sympathetic nervous system activity. There has been research on
the effect of sympathectomy on immobilization osteoporosis so my guess
is that there *may* be a cause-and-effect relationship between the swimming
and the decreased bone density.
