Question - Incisional Hernia

 Question - Incisional Hernia

I have had a splenectomy (10 yrs ago) and then a coleosystectomy (?)
(gall bladder removed) some 5 yrs ago and have now I have developed a
large incisional hernia which was masked by significant
excess weight (which I have now lost - 3.5 stone) . I have a vertical incision
in the centre of my abdomen, and the hernia (which is now very visible
and uncomfortable) is about 3" across.

My surgeon is proposing to repair it with a piece of plastic mesh,
which is attached (I believe) to the inside of my abdomen. This is quite a
new procedure in the UK, and so I would be interested to hear from people
who have had a similar operation.

Specifically:

1. Does it cause any long term discomfort?

2. Is it possible to be active (ie. swimming, running, aerobics) after
say 3 to 6 months?

3. Is it generally successful?

I am very concerned about this, and would appreciate any (relevant) comments.

If you don't want to post, then please e-mail me as above.

Thanks
