Yes. I have heard that here in the US a bone density scan should cost about
$250. A slide I saw has the patient lying on their back on a table with
their legs up on a box. You would need to find out who has this piece of
equipment.

Bone Density -- How to determine?
Bone densiotometry is the usual modality used to measure bone
density.  It's a specialized x-ray technique.  No needles or
biopsies are involved so it's non-invasive.  It does not tell us
anything about what to expect after women enter the
post-menopausal period when bone density loss becomes a major
health issue.

Given your age and good health, the test is likely to confirm
that your bone density is average for your age group.

It's probably more important to continue healthy dietary habits
(which include reasonable sources of dietary calcium), moderate
exercize, and to not smoke as a prescription for over-all good
health rather than relying on a test which will not tell you
anything about your chances of developing osteoporosis in the future.

JPS.

Is there any way for a healthy 28-year-old woman to determine what her
bone density is, without invasive procedures?  I am worried about
osteoporosis in the future.  None of my elderly relatives seem to have
been afflicted.  However, I think I could make better sense, perhaps, of
all the contradictory advice in respect to the advisability of dietary
and supplementary calcium and dairy products if I knew how strong my
bones are currently.

Bone density can be measured accurately and non invasively with a dual X
ray absorptiometer (DEXA).  The radiation dose is small, roughly
equivalent to dental X rays.  Most large medical centers and some MD's
offices have DEXA units.  The testing center should provide you with
numbers on how your overall and regional bone density compares to other
healthy women after testing and provide advice about bone density if your
values are low.
