 DiCHLORO-diFLOURO-METHANE: HOW DANGEROUS ??????

*******************************************************
1.35 ppb DiCHLORO-diFLOURO-METHANE have been found
in the air of a colleague's workplace (ca. 20 square
meters), where he is working for 12 months now. No Lab
work has been done in this room since Dec 1992, so the
concentration may have been higher when he started.
However, 2 computers are operated in the room since '93.
*******************************************************
I'd like to know whether there is any danger associated
with this chemical, and what symptoms it may cause (if
any). Also, can anybody estimate its concentration one
year ago ?
THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR REPLY !!!!

thank you for your attention,

High, Georg
This compound is chemically relatively inert and will probably give rise to
hemo-lysis. In addition, it is famous for its contribution to the
stratospheric ozone depletion. Also in this respect it should be considered to
be not wealthy.

Dichlorodifluoromethane is listed by OSHA, MAK and ACGIH as having a
permissible limit of 1000 ppm. The level you mentioned, 1.5 ppb, is too
small to be of any interest or impact. This material is a common
refrigerant. It has been described as being "one of extraordinarily low
toxicity, presenting very little practical hazard" (Industrial Hygiene
and Toxicology, D. D. Irish, 1963). Animals can acutally live in an
atmosphere of 20%, with no effects.
