How about a new newsgroup sci.med.medinfo or sci.med.info

Hi Folks:

Just suggestion here. Why don't we start a group sci.med.medinfo.
If there is enough interest, I can volunteer to collect the votes.
I
know a lot of people I know are interested in this news-group. The
group will be devoted to discussion about the medical informatics.

There are a lot of informational topics related in medicine
recently.
No one can make a paper without data manipulation using statistics
by the computer, AD/DA converter.

Current topics are rich in medinfo.
Artificial intelligence, Sophisticated man-machine interface,
electronic carte, remote diagnosis, IC card, and so on.

There are several meetings, or magazines related.
For example, SCAMSI, Medical Informaics, Artificial intelligence
in medicine.

How about it?

Takashi

And to add to the list of topics
Hospital information systems, treatment planning, medical image processing,
Physician's workstations

This is a good idea, but I cannot agree with the name.  The reason
is that any person looking at the group would easily construe the
meaning of the group as medical information as in what is a certain
disease, etc.  Thus, I would strongly oppose the NAME
sci.med.medinfo.  Perhaps a better name might be something like:
sci.med.infomatics or sci.med.comp etc. (They're not great, but the
best I could come up with in a quick moment.)

Hi-.

I have made a suggestion for opening new newsgroup on
medical informatics.

I forgot medical decision making, and so on.

Thank you for all who send me the response for the medinfo.
I will collect the votes for the sci.med.info newsgroup.

After making the proposal I have already received, 9 E-mails
for the new newsgroup of sci.med.info.

Here is the list.

Sure.  Why not?

This is a very good idea. I would like to see a discussion group in this
area. You have my vote for it.

I would be interested in your medical informatics list. Certainly, there is a
need for worldwide communication of specialists in medical informatics.

Put me on the list

It actually covers a broad range of research areas. I wonder if
such a group would actually be useful. It sure is very interesting
idea.

******************************************************************************

I like your suggestion! We are a Children's Hospital here in Buenos
Aires , Argentina (South America) with one hundred PC's into a local
net, and we are part of a bigger 'health net' with around 200 institu
tions into the net.

There are many colleagues interested on medical computing, I had
forwarded your message to all of them.

Best regards,
******************************************************************************

I think the idea of a newsgroup would be a good idea. There is already
an AI in medicine mailing list with many people subscribing. You might
like to send your message there too. You can subscribe by mailing to

and there are also archives of old mailing lists etc. The discussion
here are often quite valuable and most readers are active reasearchers
in the field of AI in medicine.

regards

Enrico

I agree.  medinfo is a bad abbreviation.  Informatics should be spelled out.
If this group doesn't get created, people should be aware that
Dr. Uckun at Vanderbilt runs a mailing list available to all those
with net access where these topics can be discussed.  I don't
have the host right now, but a phone call to him would undoubtedly
yield the information on how to subscribe.

in following the requirements of insurance claims, in addition to the in-

Sounds good here.  I do wonder, though if it might not better be placed
as comp.med.informatics  or similar.

Hi -- for all who are interested, the subscription address for the

Please note that this list is intended for the discussion of AI as
applied to medical domains, and not the broader field of medical
informatics.  There are at least two other internet/bitnet mailing lists
catering to medical informatics.  These are (I'm not sure whether either
is still active):

I've just started getting interest in Medical Informatics for the past 2
months and I am eager to get inputs from others in the nets. Well, you can
count my vote to support sci.med.medinfo.
