left brain, right brain, origin of speech

left brain, right brain, origin of speech

I'd like a doctor, preferably a neurologist to answer this....

I read in a recent post about language being lateralized to the left
brain, in most cases, of both left and right-handed people.  I've also
read about the elovution of language, and that it relates back to earlier
man learning how to throw acurately for hunting.
The theroy is that since there was no REAL advantage to man learning to
speak, in terms of survival, so something else must have happened that gave
us the ability to talk.  The cortical neurons that control the face muscles
are right next to those that control the hands, and they are usually
located in the left brain.  The action of throwing has alot to do with
speech:  the left brain controls muscle sequencing, not only for hand
movements, but also for oral-{*filter*} movements.  Just as people with
strokes in the left brain have trouble talking, they also can have trouble
sequencing muscles, i.e. putting keys into a lock, turning a key, and
opening the door.  Without this sequencing, neither acurate one-handed
throwing nor speech is possible.  So the theroy goes that as man learned to
throw (rocks, etc.) they got food, lived longer, reproduced, and passed on
that left brain power, which gradually over time increased the size of the
lft brain (and the right hemispheare symetrically).
Many monkeys are able to throw, but not acurate one-handed throws,
so it is no suprise that they cannot talk.  The advantage of one-handed
throwing is that it requires one-sided, and requires the system for speed.
This has an immediate advantage, promoting the survival of offspring.
My question involves the fact that I've also read about
left-handed throwing taking place in the right hemispheare, and the
right-handed on the left.  If this is true, then how could the theroy
relating language to throwing be true?  Does anybody have a better theroy
on the evolution of speech?  Throwing is strictly one sided, and has alot
to do with speech, and if speech is mostly on the left, how could throwing
be on both?
        I'm not a neurologist, or a scientist, I'm just a curious student
who reads too much for his own good, ignore my ignorance please...

thanks alot

I realize this is only tangentially related to your post, but
years ago first grade teachers "knew" a child was ready to
begin to read when he or she could skip properly. How would the
ability to skip be related to learning to read?

Bit long to answer. Read the chapter on language in Kandel and Schwartz-
Principles of Neural Science. It's very well explained.

There's an alternative approach to dealing with learning disabilities (as
well as some other things) called edu-kinesthetics.  It's the creation of
a chiropracter named something like Dennison.  The basic premise is that
many learning disabilities are the result of poor coordination between
the two sides of the brain, and among other things the client (child or
{*filter*}) is asked to do what they call "cross-crawling," which involves
coordinating the right hand and the left foot and vice-versa.  (It is
apparently not necessary to actually crawl.)

As usual with such alternative approaches, as far as I know there have
been no studies done using accepted scientific methodology and published
in refereed journals.  However there are a lot of edu-kinesthetics
practitioners around and they claim a lot of success stories.  I used to
get their newsletter, but I wasn't really all that interested, which is
why this information is so vague.
