 Questions following inguinal hernia repair
Okay, so today is Saturday and the repair operation was Wednesday. Wow, post op was tougher than I thought. My repair is in the mid-groin area, right hand side. Some swelling there. However, I didn't expect to see scrotal swelling and some discoloration. Is this normal? Thanks, Chuck in Massachusetts

 Questions following inguinal hernia repair
It's completely normal to see swelling around the incision, as well as black and blue discoloration into the {*filter*} and {*filter*}. Hernia repairs can be painful, no question. The pain subsides over the course of the first week and should be pretty tolerable after that time. The swelling can sometimes take a little longer to go away, and the tender ridge you feel under the hernia incision may take weeks until it feels like the surrounding tissue. HMc

No. Your inguinal region is weaker than a 'normal' one but if it has been repaired properly (hernioplasty) with an inguinal mesh or something like that then it'll be fine.

Generally, no. Strenuous excercise or repeated heavy lifing in the immediate post-op period will lead to more pain for a longer period of time, but are unlikely to cause a recurrence (assuming the surgeon used one of the modern techniques for hernia repair such as Lichtenstein, Stoppa, or Shouldice). After the post op period, there are no restrictions. You should pay attention to getting your hip flexor muscles back in shape, however. They get weaker from disuse after a hernia repair. HMc

Gee, if you are concerned about this, I would have thought you would have called your surgeon. All the best, Wyle

 Questions following inguinal hernia repair
Hi Dr. Coyote, Well, actually she doesn't work on the weekend, and well, isn't easy to get a hold of. Look at the wealth of answers I already have! =Chuck

Trying to understand the anatomy of this: now the incision was made way up high (between thigh and groin), and presumably the mesh covers through the inguinal c{*filter*}or some such. Then why the bruised tissue at the bottom of the {*filter*}? Thanks a bunch! Healing nicely. Day 1 and 2 were sort of hellish. Getting in and out of bed was hell. Getting back normal bodily functions a little dicey, but am feeling more "normal" already. -Chuck

 Questions following inguinal hernia repair
Yes, very common recovery story. When doing a hernia operation, the inguinal c{*filter*}must be opened to fix the defect. This is a c{*filter*}that runs from the inside of the abdominal wall down at an angle to the top of the {*filter*}, and the {*filter*}atic cord runs in that canal. The {*filter*}atic cord contains the gonadal vessels, the vas deferens, a bunch of nerves, and muscle fibers. Any bleeding that takes place during the dissection of the hernia, and there is always some, often tracks down the c{*filter*}and loose fatty tissue down toward the {*filter*}. HMc -

And look how long you would have waited if it were really an emergency. Get the doc out of bed, if you have to. That is what she is paid (and paid well) for. All the best, Wyle
