 CAT scan for headaches

My doctor referred me to a neurologist for frequent and persistent
migraine (vascular) headaches. He has prescribed Sandomigran and
is setting up an appointment for me to get a CAT scan done (he is
wondering if my Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (aka Osler-
Weber-Rendu) might be doing Bad Things in my brain).

A CAT scan, as I understand it, is similar in effect to an X-ray
of soft tissues, but I don't understand the process. I'm sure
someone will be able to fill me in on it.

Also, I'd appreciate some first-hand experience from people who
have had CAT scans - what is the procedure?

BTW, I self-prescribed feverfew (400 mg three times a day) and it
does seem to have reduced both the frequency and the severity of
my headaches.

Possible, but you likely just have regular migraines.

The x-ray gun shoots into your head from various angles and the
computer then reconstructs an image of the contents from the
x-rays received on the other side of your head.

You will likely get an intravenous injection of dye to try to
light up any hemangiomas that you have inside the skull.  You
then just lie still and the machine does the rest.  No problem
unless you happen to be allergic to the dye, which is rare.

Might not even use the dye. I had 2 cat scans for my headaches, one
of the sinuses and one of the brain, and no dye was used for either one.
It's not painful in the least, just boring. FOr the 'regular' scan, I
laid on this narrow table and was sent through the machine. For the
sinus scan, my head had to hang off the edge, so I was looking at the
opposite wall upside-down. It was a little difficult to breathe in
that position, but not uncomfortable otherwise. They should hang a
poster on that wall, though. Upside down.

If they don't use the dye they can practically kiss goodbye any
chance of seeing lesions of Osler-Weber-Rendue disease.
