'Tourists' harming India's health

Foreigners go to India for transplant operations
Health tourists are helping destabilise India's health system, doctors claim.
They say too much is being spent on care for foreign patients and care for rich Indians - while
public health care for poorer people is neglected.

Dr Samiran Nundy, from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, and Amit Sengupta from India's People's
Health Movement made the claims.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, they called on the Indian government to reconsider its
priorities.

It is time for the government to pay more attention to improving the health of Indians rather than
to enticing foreigners from affluent countries with offers of low cost operations and convalescent
visits to the Taj Mahal

Dr Samiran Nundy and Dr Amit Sengupta

The doctors say that increasing numbers of patients are coming to India from the Middle East,
Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh for high level care such as complex paediatric operations or liver
transplants, which are not carried out in their own countries.

In addition, patients are also coming from the UK, Europe and the US for "quick, efficient and
cheap" heart bypasses or orthopaedic operations, the doctors say in the BMJ.

'Five star hospitals'

Dr Nundy, a gastro-intestinal surgeon, and Mr Sengupta say that, while a shoulder operation in the
UK would cost 10,000 at a private hospital, or entail a wait on the NHS, in India, the same
procedure can be done for 1,700 - and within 10 days of the first email contact.

They say India is one of the top 20 countries in the world in terms of its spending on private
healthcare.

The doctors say drug and IT companies and private individuals have got into the market.

"They now dominate the upper end of the market, with five star hospitals manned by foreign trained
doctors who provide services at prices that only foreigners and the richest Indians can afford."

But at the same time, the country has one of the lowest levels of public spending on healthcare in
the world - less than 1% of gross domestic product.

Dr Nundy and Dr Sengupta said the conditions seen by the poorest were seeking care were very
different.

"Each harassed doctor may have to see more than 100 patients in a single outpatient session.

"Some of these doctors advise patients, legally or illegally, to `meet them privately' if they want
more personalised care," they said.

Dr Nundy and Dr Sengupta said that there were even reports of hospital patients having to pay bribes
to get clean bed linen.

They also warned that some Indians have to go to great lengths to pay for private care, having to
borrow money or sell assets to finance treatment.

They add: "In India, each year tuberculosis kills half a million people and diarrhoeal disease more
than 600,000.

"It is time for the government to pay more attention to improving the health of Indians rather than
to enticing foreigners from affluent countries with offers of low cost operations and convalescent
visits to the Taj Mahal."

Stupid lefties want to wreck Indian health tourism

Lefty and Commies are the most educated idiot imbeciles of the highest
order. They are determined to keep India's tens of millions wretched
and poor in that perpetual state as long as possible. They are against
all that is known to create jobs and opportunities.

Just look how absurd and anti-poor and pro-elite their policies are;
they stop privitazations which helps the rich politicians to stay in
control and milk public PSUs. Even worse, a tiny percentage of city
folks jobs are defended over and avove the interest of 100s millions of
rural folks.

Similarly, their obstruction of much needed labor reforms helps a tiny
fraction enjoy their privileges and promote laziness and inefficiency,
a situation unheard of in developed and vibrant economies, but which
help India's rivals. The people who suffer again are the poor and
unemployed, as these outdated laws keep the investors away and they end
up in investing in more liberalised economies like China; but may be it
is part of Commie agenda. But the real reason is that Commies are no
different from Lalloo; the main  reason Commies are doing is to secure
their urban vote bank of lazy, inefficient but highly politicsed sods
workers in these PSUs.

Well, that is one disadvantage we have to tolerate, being in a
democratic and free country. Actually, if you think about it, if they
allow many of their poor to become rich, their very reason to exist is
gone. Marxist/commies thrive on inducing this feeling amongst the
masses, "hey look you are oppressed, you are less privileged. ". Who
will vote for them if their voters improve their living standards. Whom
will the commies claim to be fighting for. ??

But look at what the lack of democracy and freedom does. Example our
neighbour with a dictator jerk, who has his head up his ass most of the
times he speaks.

Now I did see a documentary about this every topic a while back there are
pros and cons to all of this. The well run hospitals in fact invest in
health care and provide access to hospital facilities for the poor and do
their best. However, there are other hospitals that are being built where a
poor person will not be able to set foot in and they do not care one bit
they are 100% orientated towards the westerner and the rich Indian.

Why bring Hinduisn and Islam into this? It is about the health system after
all. In many ways if you do not have opposition and luckily we do in India
there would be no challenge to the way the country is run and government
decisions. In fact we are very lucky to have the left and the right wings of
political point of view in our country in many ways we will in time learn to
balance the two.
