 Canker sores or cold sores

My 15 year old daughter has what I call ulcers inside her mouth (to be
exact the sores are on the inside of the lip).  Both her dentist and
doctor have said that these are caused by herpes simplex virus 1.
From what I have read, HSV-1 causes cold sores and cold sores are
located on the outside of the mouth.  Any information would be greatly
appreciated.

Do a search under B vitamins and mouth sores and you should come up with a bit
of information.

The lip does have an internal component.  It's not surprising to get HSV-1
(or HSV-2) ulcers on the inside.

Vitamin A for {*filter*}Lesions
Oct. 10, 2002 (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Some patients with potentially cancerous
{*filter*}lesions may benefit from treatment with a form of vitamin A, but the jury
is still out on whether the treatment should be prescribed for everyone.

According to researchers from Israel and Canada, vitamin A treatment can help
clear up the lesions, but about 50 percent of patients will suffer from a
recurrence of the lesions after treatment is discontinued.

Scientists know vitamin A plays a significant role in promoting healthy cells,
and the vitamin has been shown to have a preventative effect on the development
of {*filter*}cancer. Researchers looked at four studies examining the effect of
topical vitamin A treatment for people with {*filter*}lesions.

Combined results show between 10 percent and 27 percent of patients experience
a complete clearing of the lesions, while another 54 percent to 90 percent
experienced a partial clearing. Side effects of the treatment are minimal, and
mainly involve irritation at the site of application and dryness of the mouth
tissue. The high rate of recurrence after treatment, however, leads the authors
to conclude the treatment is advisable only for those patients who suffer
recurrent and persistent lesions that are likely to progress to cancer.

Researchers believe more study is needed to determine the long-term
effectiveness of vitamin A for the prevention of {*filter*}cancer.

Hard to give a useful answer on this over the Net, since there's
no way to see the actual lesions. If there are ulcers near or on
the border of the red part of the lip, and they have come back
on a couple of occasions in the same location, this is probably
HSV (there is no way, without laboratory testing, to know HSV-1
from HSV-2 as both can potentially cause cold sores).

If there are shallow ulcers in various parts of the inside of the
mouth, and when they recur they don't always happen in the same
spot, then probably the lesions are canker sores (aphthous ulcers).

Usually, canker sores and cold sores look quite different. However,
a first infection with HSV can sometimes cause ulcers all over
the inside of the mouth that are pretty much indistinguishable
in appearance from canker sores. Some other viruses can do this
as well.

The first (primary) episode of herpes simplex Type I, is inside the
mouth, on mucosal surfaces.  Secondary outbreaks are external, near
the lips.  Canker sores are usually isolated lesions, and rarely
present with 2 or more lesions at a time.  They are not viral...  Hope
that helps explain... H2
