Provigil or Dexedrine for Narcolepsy?

 Provigil or Dexedrine for Narcolepsy?

Which of the two is more effective for narcolepsy?

Of course, there are convenience factors in favor of Provigil--once per day,
not a scheduled substance, etc. Perhaps less chance of negative side
effects, less potential for abuse, etc.

But in terms of sheer efficacy, in keeping narcoleptics awake, which of the
two is more effective? Or relatively equal in efficacy?

The extended-release versions of the various amphetamine products take
care of the once-per-day dosing.

One thing to point out: amphetamines are dirt-cheap, Provigil is most
certainly NOT.

Being a scheduled drug isn't that much of a nuisance (no called-in
prescriptions, mainly).

Provigil IS a controlled drug. It is a Schedule IV. It may not have the
restrictions on quantity and refills that amphetamines have (they are
Schedule II), it is a controlled drug in the US.

I think that it is a matter of the dose used and patient preference.
Cost is an important consideration for the patient, but my narcoleptic
patients feel less irritability on Provigil than on Ritalin, for
example.  H2

Actually provigil can be taken twice daily and at higher doses.

Contrary also is a higher dose might be needed and though the tests have
said differently, there is a differerence.  When I first tried it 200 mg
would do nothing, 400 would.  Now, I don't feel 800 mg plus I had to stop
because of side affects, turbinates swelling shut.

Provigil has its first weeks side affects but if it works for the person and
the only way to know is to try it, it does not have the side affects of the
other {*filter*} commonly used.

If you go to sleepnet.com and look up narcolepsy older forum and do search
on provigil you will see how people acted with provigil.

While we're on the topic of sleep-wake disorders, I"m curious what can be
done for primary hypersomnia
