The doctors do not know what causes MS, but they believe that it is an
auto-immune disease where your immune system now equates myelin as a foreign
invader of the body.  Apparently, the culprit is T-cells of the immune system
gone "haywire".

There is no cure, but there is some promising research going on.  Recently a
new drug, Betaseron (Beta Interferon 1b), was approved by the FDA in the US.
Hopefully I'll be starting this treatment soon.  This drug does not "cure" MS,
but it does extend the time between exacerbations and lessens the impact of the
next one.  BTW, the drug was approved for relapsing-remitting only.  I think
there are studies underway to examine how it would impact Chronic-progressive
MS.

If you want some help in understanding what it is like to live with MS, check
into alt.support.mult-sclerosis or get on MS-LIST.

The cause or causes are not known.

Unfortunately, zero.  Some patients do spontaneously stop getting worse,
however.

This cool and at the moment, correct answer might have seemed very cold
to me had it been addressed to me at an earlier point in my life with
Multiple Sclerosis, Doctor.

Read, as it easily could be, in isolation, one could easily interpret
this to mean that no cure for MS will ever be possible.  Surely you did
not intend to convey this message.

The possibly small step of Betseron and the very promising research into
very specific control over the immune system as well as the possibility,
not so long ago fantasy, that remylenation may be possible within the
not so distant future surely hold out hope of stopping the disease
process and even repairing damage.

I've had major symptoms since late '75, Doctor Nye, and am pretty
realistic, I think, about my chances, but when I meet a very young
person who has just been diagnosed, I have, I think, good reason to
believe they may very well see and benefit from a cure.

I mean no offense, Dr Nye, and I hope you won't consider this too harsh,
but if I read your comments in isolation, so might others and find "and
chances of being cured.", " DN> Unfortunately, zero.", disturbing.

I submit that there is every reason to believe a cure will be found and
our efforts in that direction are, I think, well worth while.
