NASHVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 7  -- The American Medical Association
(AMA) and the United States Air Force Reserve (AFRES) today
announced the creation of a medical ethics education program to
be presented to medical students and practicing physicians
nationwide as part of their ongoing medical education efforts.
AMA and AFRES officials indicated the new program will be ready to
roll out to the nation's 127 medical schools in early 1993.  Both
organizations stressed the importance of including a medical ethics
curriculum in medical schools and continuing education programs for
physicians.
"Medical ethics questions will continue to make headlines and it
is extremely important that medical students and practicing
physicians understand the impact these issues have on their
profession," said Dr. John Clowe, AMA president.
"We have a commitment to support the education of the physicians
we recruit by working with the AMA to develop an organizational
curriculum on medical ethics issues as they evolve," said AFRES
Command Surgeon Col. Thomas McNish, USAF, M.C.
The complete medical ethics program titled "The Ethical Question"
includes four videocassettes with print support materials and a copy
of the "Current Opinions of the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial
Affairs," the profession's foremost publication on medical ethics.
The four programs are titled "Informed Consent," "Death and Dying,"
"Economics and Health Care" and "Physician Assisted Suicide" and
include expert commentary from many of the nation's leading medical
ethicists as well as actual physician-patient interactions.
The medical ethics education program will be distributed free to
all 126 medical schools in the United States as a self-contained
educational kit with all four videocassettes and accompanying print
materials.  Others wishing to obtain the kit may purchase it by
calling 1-800-398-2622 after Jan. 1, 1993.
The video series is also being telecast on American Medical
Television on CNBC for physicians throughout the country to view for
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.
"We expect that this series of programs will be widely used by
medical schools in teaching students about medical ethics as well as
being a valuable resource for all physicians," said Clowe.  "The AMA
has made ensuring professionalism in medicine its number one
priority, and educating physicians about medical ethics is critical
to that goal."
The video programs were produced by American Medical Television, a
partnership between the AMA and NBC's division of Cable, and funded
by the United States Air Force Reserve.
