 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Hello All,
I would much appreciate some information regarding Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome, or the symptoms described here.

A friend has in the last 2 months been getting bouts of fatigue.
Her school doctor couldn't help, but suggested trying an expert on
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Being a student with low means of income,
compounded by the fatigue, she is at a loss and is overwhelmed.

She is apparently eligible for MediCal, so if there are any
specialist one can recommend living in the Santa Cruz or closest to that
area, please let me know.

Any help or information will be appreciated. Her symptoms are,
swollen lymph glands (around neck), ongoing low level fever, about 99F.
Some occurence of muscular pain in the pelvic region.

I would imagine a lot of diseases could fall under this, and I
don't know how the conclusion was reached. But I thought I would tap
the medical knowledge here for some pointers.

        Thanks in advance.

 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Well, I don't know much about chronic fatigue syndrome, but I do know that
I've been horridly fatigued now for the past 4-5 years.  I have been to
numerous doctors and have asked about everything I could possibly think of.
They have all just sort of grunted at the mention of CFS and none of them
have tested me for it. I'm not sure if they think I'm lying or what the deal
is.  I have been tested for just about every common ailment you can think
of and no one has ever come up with any good reason why I might be tired all
the time.  In fact, some of the doctors seem to think that I'm making this
up and have made comments to the effect that it's all in my head.  At any
rate being tired all the time isn't the least bit fun and I really hope that
someone figures out what's wrong with your friend.

I replied privately to Pathma, but it sounds like this may have
more general interest.  CFS and the closely related fibromyalgia
syndrome are respectable medical diagnoses, not "waste basket"
diagnoses as some physicians still believe.  Our understanding of
these conditions has come a long way in the past few years.  There
are no diagnostic tests.  The diagnosis is made on the basis of the
history and the absence of abnormalities suggesting other conditions.
In the case of fibromyalgia, tender points are found in characteristic
locations.  These are often found in CFS as well since there seems
to be quite a bit of overlap.  You should get in contact with the
Fibromyalgia Network at 1-805-631-1950 for the name of someone in
the Twin Cities who is knowledgeable about these conditions (I'd
be happy to see you, but I'm all the way over in Eau Claire at
Midelfort Clinic).  They also have quite a bit of literature
available for cheap.

There isn't any test for CFS.  In fact, nobody even knows what it is.
