I was recently diagnosed with Alopecia Areata (an odd bald spot half
way up the back of my head). I'm told the true cause of the condition
is unknown.
Despite my dermatologists urgings, I didn't want injections, so
instead was given Ultravate (halobetasol propionate, 0.05%), Retin-A
(tretinoin) and Rogaine (minoxidil) to apply topically.
After 6 weeks, the condition is unchanged, which my dermatologist
considers to be satisfactory. "At least it hasn't gotten worse", he
said. I do know some people progress on to alopecia totalis.
Given that the condition is supposedly basically just a cosmetic
nuisance, is there truly anything to be gained by the application of
all these various creams and unguents night and morning? Are they
palliative at best, and harmless at worst, even in combination?
Is "stress" really a significant factor, as some books hint? If so,
what am I supposed to do about it?
Lastly, is there anything else I should try for the condition, before
I give up?
Cheers,
