cost of new migrained medicine & patents

A friend of mine is taking the new migraine medicine which she
self-injects.  Currently this costs about $50-$75 a dose.  What
I'm wondering is whether the cost will remain this high, or if
there is some reason to expect that the price will drop in the
near future.

I can remember when I was a child always being given the latest
and greatest allergy medicines.  They would start out at $1-$2
a pill while the company who patented the medication was the only
one allowed to manufacture it.  Then, after about a year, the
patent protection would stop and the price of the medication
would drop drastically.  Is this the case w/ the migraine
medication?  If so, does anyone know how long patent protection
will last?

thanks,
Jon

Sumatriptan is fairly new, so the only way I cam imagine there
being a price break anytime soon is if a competitor comes out with a "me-too"
drug.

There is a rumour that Merck, Sharp and Dome are coming out with a
modified version of sumatriptan that sould bypass the patent.  I'm
surprised by the $50 - 75 cost.  The later posting of $30 per injection is
closer to the cost of the medication here in Canada, where is has been
available for about two or three years.
