 Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Survey

Hello, I am a student at the Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science (at
Worcester Polytechnic Institute) and I am doing an interdisciplinary project
(humanities & science) on artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. As part of
my project I am conducting a survey of medical professionals to find out more
about the state of AI in medicine today. I know most who read this newsgroup
are very busy people so I didn't make the survey awfully long. If you do have
an interest in responding to me, please do so by email. I can be reached at

field of research.

                                        Sincerely,
                                        Adam Stachelek

*** AI in Medicine Survey ***

(all responses will be kept confidential, internet addresses will be erased
upon receipt, but you may leave questions blank anyways)

1. How many years have you been a doctor ?
2. What is your medical specialty ?
3. What type of environment do you work in (hospital/clinic/lab/research/etc)
   ?

4. Do you have a computer at home and/or at the office ?
5. Approximately what percentage of your time is spent using the computer ?

6. Out of that percent, what percent of computer time is medicine related ?

7. Briefly explain the medical uses of your computer (word processing/
   database/info lookup/lab computer) ?

8. Do you use your computer at all for decision making in your medical field ?

9. If a computer program were available that would help you analyze symptoms
and prescribe treatment, would you use it ?

10. What else could a computer do for you in your field to aid you (knowledge
   database/patient history/etc) ?

Do you have any other comments ?

I'm sorry, I absolutely mean no disrespect regarding your survey, in fact, I
should take the time to fill it out BUT....
There was something VERY funny about reading the line "artificial
intelligence in medicine"  It just struck me that so much of our medical
intelligence is artificial and has become so very far away from actual
people and the real intelligence of our bodies.  Especially on days like
today when I go from my acupuncture appointment back into my office doing
western medicine.

Oh gee...
