 thoracic outlet syndrome info

I have been experiencing left arm pain (numbness) combined with tightening
of the chest. Most severe when smoking. BP and EKG says heart is fine.
Could this be TOS?, i need more info about what it is and treatment.

Paul,
Only a thorough examination can answer your question as to what
your problem is.  I must say, however, that it doesn't sound like thoracic
outlet syndrome to me.  I'd be more concerned about the (far more ominous)
diagnosis of coronary artery disease.  Smoking is a risk factor for that
disease.  During smoking, oxygen content of the {*filter*} drops, and (in the
prsence of coronary artery disease) that can trigger angina.  A resting
EKG may not show this; a stress test (or more invasive exam) would be
needed.
Usually, the tingling (more than pain) of thoracic outlet syndrome
occurs when the arm is held away from the body and further back, or when
the arm is elevated over the head in exaggerated fashion.
I recommend you have a complete evaluation by a doctor
knowledgeable in cardiovascular disease.
Oh, yeah...if you're worried about your health, quit smoking.
        Good luck.
