 acid reflux GERD questions
I have been suffering from acid reflux disease (GERD) for 6 years now. Why is it when I have a cold, as I do now - that involves snuffed up sinuses with yellow mucus, does the symptoms of GERD get a lot worse? I have adjusted my diet and take histamine2 (H2) blockers daily. Onions and certain spices definately make it worse and are avoided. What are the long term consequences of histamine2 (H2) blockers? proton pump inhibitors? I have periods of complete relief for weeks at a time and at times, a few weeks of severe pain. When ever my GERD acts up, I burp a lot. So when I have relief for weeks, no burps. Is the burping/belching a sign of some sort of infection? Or is it merely a sign of the irritation? Anxiety disorders run in my family and my father takes medications to handle it. I have and occasionally do suffer from panic attacks. But through "mental exercises", I have been able to manage it. Should I consider anti-anxiety {*filter*} to help the anxiety and the GERD? I have asked these questions of the various doctors I have seen and have gotten non-commital and vague answers. Thank you for your help, Chris

I don't know. Quote: > What are the long term consequences of histamine2 (H2) blockers? > proton pump inhibitors?
There are theoretical risks, as with all medications. In reality, these sorts of medications are among the safest there are. Quote: > Is the burping/belching a sign of some sort of infection? Or is it > merely a sign of the irritation?
The latter, probably. Quote: > through "mental exercises", I have been able to manage it. Should I > consider anti-anxiety {*filter*} to help the anxiety and the GERD?
Don't confuse the two diseases. While one may lead to the other, treat each disease on its own merits.

 acid reflux GERD questions
PPIs and H2 blockers are approved for long term use. Anit-anxiety {*filter*} will be of no use in treating your GERD symptoms. It is common for GERD symptoms to wax and wane. When acid refluxes into your esophagus, you swallow and gulp air, forcing it into the stomach and thereby clearing the esophagus of the acid. The air in the stomach is then belched out. More acid in stomach = more air swallowing = more belching. Your GERD can be cured such that you would be able to eat anything, take no medications; it just depends on how much trouble you want to go to. If your symptoms are being managed to your satisfaction, and an upper GI endoscopy has shown no evidence of pre-cancerous changes in your espohagus (Barrett's Espohagus), then ongoing medical treatment is appropriate. If not, consider investigating surgical options. HMc

I experience this around lunch time many days. Not only that, but I suspect that the air pressure somehow affects my heart, causing it to beat in an irregular way, and making me a little dizzy, with a tightness in the neck. Soon as I burp a LOT, it seems to improve, pretty much clears up. I have a very large hiatus hernia. I've had plenty of heart checks, so the mechanics are apparently OK. Also have no esophageal irritation. I've been taking my Prilosec at bedtime, but now I wonder if in the morning would be better, I don't often have problems in the night. I may try that - any comments from anyone? Quote: >Your GERD can be cured such that you would be able to eat anything, take no >medications; it just depends on how much trouble you want to go to. acid reflux GERD questions
It may be that you have an undiagnosed H. Pylori infection. It has been my experience that many people with gastritis and reflux are virtually cured by taking antibiotics. DAB, RN

H. Pylori has nothing to do with acid reflux disease. HMc

If your reflux is refractory to medications you may want to consider anti-reflux surgery (Nissen Fundoplication) which can be performed through keyhole incisions.

You have unique experiences. SOME people with gastritis get better on antibiotics - many don't. Most people with GERD see no change after treating H. Pylori (because it doesn't cause reflux) and many find that it makes their heartburn worse because the now less inflamed stomach works better and so does more of what it does best - makes acid! Actually there have been a few reports of GERD exacerbations with eradication of HP-- What's up with that? Pete Quote:

stop eating all sugar, pasta, potatoes etc..follow strict low carb and see what happens. Husband and I both had GERD, went on low carb diet and noticed that not only did we lose weight but ALL reflux symptoms disappeared. Joan
