Question about Scoliosis and back pain

I have had constant back pain, mostly upper but some lower too, since
I was a very young child.  Not too long ago I had a chest X-ray to
check for pneunomia.  The doctor informed me that I didn't have
pneumonia, but did ask me about my scoliosis.  Until that day I
didn't know that I had scoliosis.  Is there any effective treatment
for scoliosis for someone who is in their 30s.  Is the scoliosis the
cause of my back pain--back pain that is sometimes so severe that I
cannot function at all.  Also, since early childhood, I frequently
get severe aches and pains in my muscles and joints, which can also
keep me from functioning.

Thanks.

Scoliosis typically doesn't worsen at your age.  It tends to worsen during the
puberty years when kids are growing a lot and probably as we get elderly.
You might want to go to an orthopedic surgeon for an evaulation.  There are
some things that might help you - primarily exercise - especially swimming.
Bracing isn't too advisable as you want the muscles to be active and support
the spine.  If your scoiosis was really bad, you would have known about it
years ago and then surgery is warranted in some cases.

Are you saying you had debilitating back and joint pain all through
childhood with no diagnosis or treatment?  What you had sure sounds like
some sort of child-onset arthritis to me.  Whatever it is, it should have
been treated.  As for your scoliosis: I don't think they use surgical
corrections in {*filter*}s, but supposedly there are exercises that help.  I had
a friend with it, and she took ballet lessons.  She said as long as she
kept up her lessons and her practice the scoliosis didn't bother her.
I think an orthopedist followed by a physical therapist would be
indicated.

They do use surgical corrections for scoliosis in {*filter*}s; they implant
rods on either side of the spine and bolt on hooks that go around the
vertebra.  One of the members of my car pool had this surgery
scheduled before her husband died (she postponed for a while) and she
brought in pictures of the hardware.  It looks pretty horrorific, but
she's gone from pain to numbness and the time is coming to install it.
She did the exercises for years, but they only slowed the problem,
not stopped it.

There's a national scoliosis group and there may be local ones, too.
I'd suggest asking at the nearest teaching hospital.  My friend found
hers through UCLA.
