Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone heard about an ear surgery that replaces hardened earbones
with some other artificial earbones?!

What are the successful probability?  ( I heard the patient can gain back 80% of hearing)
Is it widely available in US & Canada?
How expensive is the operation?
Any know side-effects that you know of or think of?

Thanks in advance,
Baldwin Ng

By "hardened earbones", I assume you mean "otosclerosis".  I don't know
how common the procedure is, but it is done at my institution.
Sometimes under local anesthesia (so the implant can be tested during
the procedure), sometimes under general anesthesia.  I don't know about
costs, but I can tell you that the risks (other than to your hearing)
are about the same as other minor operations.
