 skipped heart beats

Dolores;

Glad to hear you're feeling better but I would urge you to consult with
your doctor re: continued use of magnesium.   While magnesium, like
other minerals, is essential for the maintenance of health, magnesium
toxicity can cause serious problems.   During Mg therapy, serum Mg
should be monitored frequently and magnesium supplementation should be
discontinued once normal magnesium serum levels are attained.

Also, if you do have a magnesium deficiency, your doctor may want to do
further tests to determine the cause of this deficiency.

Sincerely,
Marilyn McCool

Magnesium serum level is NOT a good figure for magnesium status. In fact there is NO
fair solution to obtain an accurate assessment of Mg status.

Magnesium deficiency sometime (probably often)exists with a normal magnesium serum
level.
So how to decide going on or stopping magnesium supplementation ?
If some good effects seems to have a kind of relation with magnesium supplementation,
then why not go on with magnesium. Moreover magnesium balance is very slow, that is to
say, it takes a long time for magnesium status to be optimal after a deficient time.

If Dolores does in fact have a magnesium deficiency caused by such
disorders as diabetes and/or  a malabsorption problem,  (where diarrhea
does occur), how will she know that the diarrhea is caused by too much
magnesium or the underlying disorder?

I agree, in that serum levels don1t reflect the status of intracellular
or bone Mg stores; however,  a serum magnesium concentration is
indicated when Mg deficiency is symptomatic or associated with severe,
persistent hypomagnesemia. According to Merck, serum magnesium
concentrations under 1.6mEq/L  is often a sign that Mg depletion is
severe.

First of all, make sure that   the renal status of the individual who is
taking Mg supplementation is known before suggesting that he/she takes
magnesium supplements.  Also, whether or not the  individual is taking
other Mg-containing {*filter*} such as antacids or purgatives.

That  Dolores  has responded favorably to magnesium therapy  might
suggest that her skipped heart beats were the result of an underlying
disorder that resulted in a magnesium deficiency and hence other
electrolyte imbalances.   A magnesium defiency  is seen in diabetics,
malabsorption syndromes, and {*filter*}ics.
Rather than treating the symptoms,  identification of what is causing a
possible Mg deficiency now, and subsequent treatment of a possible
underlying condition may  save Dolores additional health problems in the
future.

It1s great that Dolores is responding favorably to the Mg
supplementation - but,  WHY?  She1s much more likely to have this
question answered if she  consults with her doctor(s).

Sincerely,
Marilyn
