 success with acid reflux?

Has anyone had a pertistent problem with acid reflux and managed to be cured of
it?  Even a proton pump inhibitor such as Protonix hasn't worked really well
for me. I seldom drink {*filter*}  and have cut out coffee. I'm not obese either.
I am over 50. Any success stories would be appreciated.

If you do indeed have acid reflux disease, and medications + lifestyle
modifcations don't control the problem to your satisfaction, it's time to
begin considering surgical options. eg; gastric fundoplication or Stretta
procedure. There is no question that you can be cured of GERD and eliminate
the need for such medications, but it may take an operation to do it.

Actually, the sources I've seen indicate only an 88% success rate (12%
of patients experiencing recurrence of GERD symtoms, and about 4%
requiring repeated surgery).

The most recent study I've seen is

 Anvari M, Allen C.
Five-year comprehensive outcomes evaluation in 181 patients after
 laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication.
 J Am Coll Surg. 2003 Jan;196(1):51-7.

although I've seen similar numbers in other studies.

Rich
(who is one of those people for whom a Nissen didn't remove the need
for medication)
