 HELP Serious reflux

Anyone know how to stop an attack of esophageal reflux in progress? I know
a lot of the avoidance tricks--including propping the bed, etc. But out of
the blue last night had an attack--haven't had one for a long time--and it
was the worst I've ever had. Thought I was going to drown. Felt like an
upward spasming that wouldn't stop for minutes and minutes. Tried my
standard Gavascon but . . .Can't talk today--or eat needless to say.
I'm not sure I want to know the answer to this but, can an attack ever
prove fatal? How seriously should I take this and what can I do?
Thanks in advance.

jlpsg;

I've had the same situation more than once... makes you wish you'd die so it
would stop. I've never died from it <G>, but I appreciate what you're going
through. For me, it never happens unless I overeat before bed (especially a
fatty meal).

An attack in progress... the only thing you can do is stand up, this makes
gravity your ally rather than your enemy. I gargle with a liquid antacid /
water solution ASAP in an attempt to stop the burning, but I'm also hoarse the
next day.

Good luck...

I had a similar problem - waking in the middle of the night in agony -
for several years, and it was getting worse when I was lucky enough to
meet up with an Iranian M.D. (refugee from the Ayatollah) by the name of
F. Batmanghelidj. Dr. B has written an amazing book called "Your Body's
Many Cries for Water" in which he explains his years of research into
the subject of chronic dehydration - as the basis for many degenerative
diseases, including thsoe of the digestive tract like ulcers and
esophageal reflux. Following his advice, I began upping my water intake,
particularly before meals. Within weeks I noted the following:  I could
stop an attack from developing into a full blown painful twenty+ mintue
episode by forcing myself to sip water very slowly at the first signs
that it was coming on (this was a frequent occurence at mealtimes); I
noted a diminution in the number and severity of night onset attacks.
This was one eyar go and today I am almost entirely free of reflux
attacks! That's saying a lot considering how badly I was suffering. Dr.
B's book is a treasure inasmuch as it is a valid scientific explanation
of the reason the comon sense advice to 'drink more water' is something
that really muust be adhered to. I hope this helps. The condition can be
dangerous, I 've recently learned, since the acid sill eventually eat up
your gut.

Ask your physician about Axid.  I've used it for the past couple of years
for gastric reflux problems and it works wonders.
