 LapCholecystectomy--Best Place

After several years of fooling around with what is most likely gallbladder
dyskinesia, I've decided to finally get it out.  The diliemna---choice
between a big city teaching hospital vs. private not for profit smaller
hospital.  I'm leaning towards the latter--it's in a smaller city, but
seems to be quite competent in doing these surgeries--they are the only
one doing several types of lap operations in the city.  The facility was
immaculate;  no smells;  90% RN coverage, and plenty of nursing staff; and
has an experienced team for lap surgeries.  They have house staff for
coverage after hours, and medical director was quite forthcoming in
information. ie:  I can have the chief of anesthesiology present
throughout;  surgeon has done between l50 to 200 of surgeries, and is a
general/vascular surgeon with many years experience;  nosocomial infection
rate well below national average;  and they are sending complication rate
to surgeon to release to me.  They use electrocauterization, and I'd be
having introperative cholangiogram.  Anything else I should check out?  I
feel comfortable that they can handle this procedure quite adequately.
The teaching hospital on the other hand, is ok----but has many of the
problems inherent in big city hospitals. If I had a rare disease, and
needed that approach, I'd go there hands down----however, this is a common
operation--and I don't want to be a training subject.  I found the
attitudes in the private hospital much more to my liking, and think they
pay a bit more attention.  Any opinions on the options? Location isn't a
factor.

Sounds like you've already made a rational decision.  Good luck with
your surgery.

Go for it. For a lap chole, there is no intrinsic advantage of having it
done at a large teaching hospital. It is a very common operation nowadays.
It sounds like you have done adequate homework, too. Good luck with you
operation!

Thank you for the response---pretty much what I decided.  Touring the
hospital, and being assured that I can have the experts I want (surgeon
and anesthesiologist) makes the whole thing much less stressful.  I also
liked the "southern hospitality" of the private hospital.  I'm confident
that I can have it my way as much as possible, and be in relatively safe
hands.  Fortunately, I'm not in immediate need of the surgery,  but most
likely it will be sometime this year.  I can't stay on the Actigal
forever.
