Hello!
Diphyllobothrium Latum (sure is a mouthful) is the name of the parasite
that you have heard about. It is a definite cause of vit B-12 deficiency;
however, it causes the deficiency by simply absorbing the vitamin - not by
consuming intrinsic factor.
So yes, if you have vit B deficiency, this may be a cause; however, if
you are suffering from pernicious anemia (in which antibodies to intrisic
factor and the partietal cells that make the intrinsic factor are formed)
then even if you did not have the D. Latum bug, you would still be
lacking in intrinsic factor and thus be vit B deficient. Unfortunately
problems with intrinsic factor are not as simple as having a bug
(fortunately they can be helped by vit B-12 injections).
I hope that this helps!
